Race information
Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for the race so far. If anyone else is interested, come to packet pick-up or to the race and sign-up!!
Packet pick-up will be at St. Columba from 12:00-3:00 Saturday afternoon, April 12 or you can pick up your packets Sunday morning before the race. You will receive your race number and goody bag at the pick-up. We have had lots of great items donated for door prizes and for the overall male and female winners.
We marked part of the course today and I want to warn you that with all of the rain, part of the course is wet. If you are planning to run the entire six hours, you might want to bring some extra socks and shoes. The loop is a 3.1 mile loop on dirt trails, grassy trails, and a gravel road. We will have plenty of aid at the start/finish - all kinds of food, water, and gatorade. There will also be hotdogs, hamburgers, and many beverages for all participants at the completion of the six hours.
There will be signs directing you to the start/finish once you arrive at St. Columba - make sure to see below for directions to St. Columba!
Thanks!!

6-hour Endurance Run!!
On the way to Laurel, MS for the MS 50 Michael, Patrick, and myself starting tossing around ideas for a race. We have been talking about putting on a race for a while now, but that's all it was - just talk. We have heard from numerous sources that the death run is not going to happen this year, so we decided to hold an event of our own. After brainstorming, we decided to do something different for the Memphis area trail runners. We aren't going to hold a typical 10K, 25K, or 50K - we are going to hold a 6-hour endurance run!!
So what is a 6-hour endurance run? You have many options:
1. Run as far as you can in 6 hours.
2. Run as many miles as you want then stop before the 6-hour mark.
3. Run as far as you want, take an break, run again, take a break, run again.
4. You get the picture.
So you can try to run a 50K in 6 hours, you can try to run a marathon in 6 hours or you can come out for a long run. It doesn't matter to us - we just want a fun event for trail runners.
Here are the details:
When - April 13, 2008, start time at 9am, finish time at 3pm
Where - St. Columba Episcopal Conference Center - see map below for directions
Course - 3 mile loop on gravel road and green trails
Aid - One aid station at the start/finish with plenty of water, Gatorade, ultra food, and a bathroom
Awards - Awards given out at 3:15
Post-race party - Heck yeah! Stay around for food, drink, and music!!
Entry fee - $35 pre-registration (4/1/2008) $40 late and race day registration
Proceeds - Go to St. Columba so make checks payable to St. Columba
Swag - T-shirt plus a goody bag
Questions - post a comment below or email memphisultra@gmail.com
How do I register? Click on the picture below!!
Map to St. Columba
Take the Sycamore View exit 12 (the first exit east of I 240). Go north on Sycamore View through Bartlett, (it will change names to Bartlett Boulevard). At Memphis Arlington it will change to Billy Maher Road. Continue going north 2.1 miles, turn left into St. Columba.
We hope to see you all April 13!! Happy running!

Swamp Stomper 2008
A congratulations to all of the finishers in the Swamp Stomper from Memphis Ultra. It was a twelve degree morning. Very Chilly!!!
The 25K Racers
Holly- 3:11:47 41 of 86
Laura- 3:11:47 40 of 86
Look at Holly's blog for her run down of the race. Her and Laura started out slow and steady and picked it up towards the end. As they approached the finish, Laura edged out Holly to finish in 40th place. Laura said she wanted to cross first because she had the age advantage on Holly. Great Race, Fast Time!!!
The 50K Racers
Michael- 6:49:39 32 of 52
Patrick- 7:38:34 44 of 52
Vinnie- 7:46:27 45 of 52
M. Mobley- 7:50:43 47 of 52
M. Hudson- 8:35:00 50 of 52
Check Patrick and Mike Hudsons blog's to get their account of the race. It was a blast. This was Vinnie's first attempt at an Ultra Marathon. He now has one under his belt and is hungry for more. Vinnie, Patrick, and Michael Mobley ran the majority of the race together and got strung out across the last few miles.
Overall, it was a great race and everyone did fantastic.

New Ultra Member!!!
I was just notifying everyone to be on the look out for a new member of the Memphis Ultra crew. Vinnie Spataro will be attempting his first Ultra this coming Sunday. He has been training with us for the past couple of months and will be officially inducted after the completion of the Swampstomper 50K. You will be able to spot Vinnie by the Memphis Ultra jersey.
Also be on the lookout for the other Memphis Ultra members. Holly will be running the 25K portion of the race and the rest of the crew will be cheering everyone on throughout the course.
A special shout out to Ultra Mike Hudson who will be participating in the 50K as well.
Good Luck and Happy Trails

3K
I think I'm the only Memphis Ultra runner participating in the Memphis Runners Winter Cross Country series. Probably because the races aren't very ultra-y. It started with a 3K today, then it goes up to a 5K, 8+k, and 10K. Getting ready for the race today I wondered if I should wear my Memphis Ultra shirt, then I decided against it. Thought that might be a little weird. But I will definitely wear it to the Swampstomper 25K next weekend even though I'm just running the 25K. I need to do some advertising for our little group!
Happy running!

Work in progress
Well, the Memphis Ultra blog is as the title reads, a work in progress. We have all been busy lately with new babies, work, etc. I think it is all most of us can do just to get a run in! Michael, Patrick, and Drew went on a long run this morning with Michael and Patrick running 30 and Drew running 20! I headed out today at Shelby Farms for an 8 miler that turned into a 5 miler because of a huge blood blister plus I have my first race of the season tomorrow - a 3K at Overton Park. I know, a 3K is not very ultra, but running some small races for a while so I can possibly build up to another 50K.
Hopefully we can get some work on this blog done and hopefully do a profile of it's members, plus start some discussions or post some times to run. Until then...
Happy running!
